Yahtzee Scoring: Every Category and Its Points

Yahtzee scoring looks intimidating until you see it as 13 simple boxes. This reference explains how Yahtzee scoring works for every category — from the upper section (Ones through Sixes) to the lower section (Full House, straights, Yahtzee) — plus the two bonus rules that swing your total. Keep it open while you play: it doubles as a one-screen scorecard cheat sheet. Written by a 20-year game systems designer, every value here matches the official Hasbro rules.

Yahtzee Full House — 3 of One + 2 of Another = 25

A Yahtzee full house is three dice of one value and two of another (e.g., 3-3-3-5-5). It always scores a flat 25 points, regardless of which numbers are involved. It is one of the most reliable mid-value boxes because it only needs a pair plus a triple — far easier than a straight.

The Upper Section Bonus (+35)

The top six boxes are the upper section. Add them up. If the subtotal reaches 63 or more, you earn a flat +35 bonus — the single biggest scoring lever in the game. The cleanest path: collect at least three of every face (3×1 + 3×2 + … + 3×6 = 63). Missing the bonus is the most common reason a game stalls below 200.

Small Straight (30) vs Large Straight (40)

Small straight: any four dice in sequence (1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, or 3-4-5-6) = 30 points.

Large straight: all five dice in sequence (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6) = 40 points.

A large straight also satisfies a small straight, so never "waste" a large straight in the small box — take the 40.

The Yahtzee Bonus (+100)

The first Yahtzee scores 50 in the Yahtzee box. Every additional Yahtzee after that — when the Yahtzee box is already filled — scores a +100 bonus and must be placed using the Joker rule.

The Joker Rule (Second Yahtzee)

If you roll a Yahtzee but the Yahtzee box is already taken: (1) You still get the +100 bonus. (2) If the matching upper box (e.g., Fives) is still open, you must use it. (3) If the upper box is closed, use any open lower box — and for Full House / Small / Large Straight you score the fixed value (25 / 30 / 40) even if the dice don't literally form that pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Yahtzee scoring work?

You fill 13 boxes over 13 rounds. Upper boxes sum their face; lower boxes pay fixed values (Full House 25, Small Straight 30, Large Straight 40, Yahtzee 50) or the dice sum. Hit 63 in the upper for a +35 bonus.

How many points is a Yahtzee full house?

A Yahtzee full house is always worth a flat 25 points — three of one number plus a pair of another. It doesn't matter which numbers they are.

What is the upper section bonus in Yahtzee?

If your upper section (Ones–Sixes) totals 63 or more, you earn a flat +35 bonus. It's the biggest single swing in scoring and the core of any winning strategy.

How many points is a large straight in Yahtzee?

A large straight — five dice in a row — scores 40 points. A small straight (any four in a row) scores 30. A large straight also qualifies as a small straight, so always take the 40.

What is the Yahtzee bonus?

After your first Yahtzee (50 points), each additional Yahtzee scores a +100 bonus under the Joker rule. It's why experienced players sometimes deliberately go for a second one.

What is the highest possible Yahtzee score?

The theoretical maximum is 1,575 — all 13 boxes maxed plus repeated Yahtzee bonuses. In practice, 250+ is excellent and 300+ is rare.
